He may be gone onsceen, but he remains close offscreen. Jesse Lee Soffer decided to part ways with his character Jay Halstead during Chicago PD‘s tenth season, but he recently popped up on Instagram to post photos from the set of the show!

Soffer posted a series of photos of him and a dog with the caption: “Made a new friend at work.” The “work” bit caught the attention of several followers, and it didn’t take much sleuth work to determine that he was referring to Chicago PD.

Is Halstead coming back to Chicago PD?

As many already know, Soffer has been hired to direct an episode of the show, despite no longer being part of the cast. The episode has been highly anticipated by fans, with some going on to suggest that he will make a surprise cameo as Halstead.

Unfortunately, the theories surrounding a surprise Halstead return have been curtailed by PD showrunner Gwen Sigan. She acknowledged that the door was left open for the character in the future, but confirmed that there haven’t been any talks of a concrete plan yet.

"“There are no plans to see him on screen, but we’re very excited that he is coming back and directing one”, She revealed to TV Insider. “I think he’s gonna really enjoy it. I think it will be a nice opportunity for him.”"

Be that as it may, it’s nice to see Soffer in the mix and on the set that we’ve grown accustomed to seeing him on for a decade. The joy has extended to his former co-stars, who have voiced praise for his directing style.

Patrick John Flueger, who plays Ruzek, told that he’s looking forward to working with Soffer in a different capacity. This is what he told the outlet:

"“He’s got incredible ideas, he’s able to offer them to actors and to the writers and to camera people in a way that displays diplomacy that I think you have to have when you’re directing TV that maybe you don’t have to have when you’re directing movies.”"
