Chicago Med has had an interesting eighth season. The medical drama has had to say goodbye to several characters, whether they be newcomers like Dr. Scott (Guy Lockard) or veterans like Ethan Choi (Brian Tee).

As things get deeper into the season, however, and the new generation of Med characters interact with the old guard, fans have invariably looked at the show’s future. A future that, as of right now, is uncertain.

NBC has yet to renew Chicago Med for additional seasons, which means there’s a chance it could be over after season 8. Is that likely, though? Or is Med going to get picked up for additional years?

Is Chicago Med renewed for season 9?

So, for starters, we will have the answer to these rhetorical questions soon.

Historically, NBC has saved its most exciting renewal announcements for the first quarter. All three One Chicago shows, for example, were picked up for three additional seasons at the 2020 Winter Critics Association Presentation.

Now does the network have a good reason to pick up Chicago Med? In a word, yes. The medical drama has been a consistent source of ratings for the entirety of its eight seasons, and while it often comes in third place to Chicago Fire and Chicago PD, it has actually made up some ground and snagged the second place crown from PD in recent ratings polls.

Med is also protected, somewhat, by the larger One Chicago brand. One Chicago is one of NBC’s biggest properties, and much of its strength comes from the fact that it has so much variety and is interconnected with other shows, namely Law and Order and FBI.

Cancelling only one of the shows would do damage to One Chicago brand as a whole, which is a chance we don’t assume the network wants to take. As such, we have high hopes that Med will be picked up once again.
