Chicago PD gives heartbreaking update on Halstead

Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is having a tough time. Not only is the Chicago PD character forced to endure the taunts and clues of killer Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White), but she can’t seem to reach her husband, Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), on the phone.

He’s been gone for months, and promised Upton that he’d be back inside of year. The more time has passed, however, the less certain Upton feels about the future of her marriage. Getting the former cop on the phone was a big part of the season 10 episode “I Can Let You Go.”

Are Halstead and Upton still married on Chicago PD?

So the episode starts with Upton trying (and failing) to get through to her husband, who is still fighting cartels in Central America. Upton never brings this frustration up with her co-workers, though Sean is able to see right through her facade.

He knows that Upton is getting increasingly lonely, and uses the information he received on a kidnapped woman to get more face time with her. Upton and Sean have numerous scenes over the course of the episode, and while unspoken, the shared sense of loneliness both unites and (in Upton’s case) frightens them.

Upton tries once more to call Halstead at the end of the episode, and while the latter doesn’t pick up, she does manage to get through to a superior officer. He confirms that Halstead is doing well, but reveals that he has put in a request to spend more time in Central America. This means that he will be blowing past his initial eight month promise and will now be fighting off cartels for an unknown amount of time.

Needless to say, the revelation devastates Upton, who breaks down in tears after she hangs up. It’s a heartbreaking scene to watch play out, and one we will hopefully get context for as the show goes on. It seems like a surprisingly cruel thing for Halstead to do.
