Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) were married under tense circumstances. Both of them had their demons, but they comprised one of Chicago PD‘s most endearing couples because it seemed like they would always face these demons together.

The sad realization during the episode “I Can Let You Go” is that this isn’t true. Upton is going to have to face down her demons alone, since Halstead has left the U.S. and relegated himself to fighting cartels in Central America.

To add insult to injury, Upton found out that Halstead put in a request to spend more time away, meaning his promise to return in eight months was broken. It was a tragic moment for the cop, and one that she will have to process for the rest of season 10.

Is Upton going to divorce Halstead on Chicago PD?

Tracy Spiridakos reflected on the character during a recent interview with Variety. She confirmed that Upton is going to “change” as a result of being left behind, and having the hope of a husband who will return squashed.

"“It’s the first time we see her break down since he’s left, since their goodbye”, the actor pointed out. “I think there’s gonna be some changes for her over the next little while.”"

The most heartbreaking part of all this is the state of Upton and Halstead’s marriage. It was done in haste, sure, but it was also done sweetly, and in secret. Their small ceremony was one of the big highlights of season 9, and it seemed as though things were looking up. Upton is going to have to make peace with the fact that her marriage is almost certainly crumbling.

Will this realization sink in? Spiridakos certainly thinks so.

"“She still considers herself married”, she noted, before discussing the semantics of Upton still sporting her wedding ring. “I think her taking it off, I’m sure there will be a moment that will come. I assume that’s coming. I’m interested to see what that will be like. Is that a goodbye? Is that self preservation?”"

These are big questions, and unpleasant ones to boot. Upton has already been through the ringer after feeling like she was being pushed to the side, but this latest discovery makes it seem as though she will never be prioritized in Halstead’s life again.

The path towards moving will be difficult, and we can’t wait to see the emotional journey that the writers (and Spiridakos) take us on.
