We were all shocked to discover that Cindy Herrmann (Robyn Coffin) was diagnosed with lung cancer. Partially because she didn’t smoke, but also because her life with Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) was such a reliable constant on Chicago Fire.

It seemed like the couple could get through anything, and how they truly will have to brace their toughest challenge yet during the back end of season 11.

While the severity of what lies ahead remains to be seen, showrunner Andrea Newman decided to clue viewers in on what to expect.

Is Robyn Coffin leaving Chicago Fire?

She told NBC that the couple have a “rough road” ahead of them.

"“It is going to be a rough road for the whole Herrmann family as Cindy battles lung cancer”, she noted. “There’s a tough fight ahead, with no short cuts or easy solutions, but the Herrmann family, and the 51 family, will come together to help in all sorts of ways as the situation progresses.”"

While the initial diagnosis was shocking, it was the attempt to remedy it that led to an even tougher revelation for the Herrmann family. In episode 12, Cindy underwent surgery, yet was told that not all of the cancer could be removed. The doctors informed her that chemotherapy would be the next logical step.

The doctors urged Herrmann to stay “hopeful” in the face of such a daunting period, and Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker) is also on hand to offer his support. Still, one can’t help but grimace at the knowledge of what Cindy is going to have to undergo over the next couple of episodes.

It’s hard to imagine a world in which the writers kill Cindy off, leaving not only a widowed spouse but a bunch of kids. It would be shocking to the point of being off-putting, and risk alienating some fans (understandably so). We’re optimistic that she will make it.
