Chicago Med is entering the digital age. Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) has assumed power over Gaffney Medical Center, and the cutthroat businessman has decided to implement things like AI and robot tech to help diagnose patients.

It’s something the Gaffney staff is reluctant to embrace, and rightfully so, but it also gives the writers a chance to explore dilemmas that are currently being posed in the real world today. To further strengthen comparisons between Gaffney’s fictional set and real hospitals, the show has cast a real doctor to voice the AI tech.

Are there real doctors on Chicago Med?

The AI that been added to Med is voiced by Dr. Oren Gottfried. He’s been a medical consultant on the show for some time, reviewing scripts for their medical accuracy, but he recently pitched the idea that take on the role of the AI due to his familiarity with often confusing terminology.

"“I serve as a surgical assistant, my voice. I’m giving guidance to the surgeons”, Gottfried told WRAL News. “The surgeons are asking me questions. I’m helping them almost like an extra surgeon in the room.”"

It’s a smart bit of casting, and one that adds credence to a concept that has yet to take root in hospitals throughout the world. Despite this, Dr. Gottfried says we aren’t far off from a world that regularly uses AI tech to aid with diagnoses.

The doctor’s presence also leads to scenarios that may not have otherwise been conjured up for a given episode. Ideally, these scenarios would never play out in real life, but many have or at least are possible.

"“Being a consultant, it allows me to think of scenarios that I don’t have to live through”, Gottfried added. “Many times I’ve crafted complications that I don’t want to ever see in real life.”"
