Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is at an impasse. Professionally, the Chicago PD stalwart is better than ever: she led the takedown of Sean O’Neal (Jefferson White) and continues to rescue women from horrifying fates.

Personally, she’s ruminating on the collapse of her marriage to Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) and the fact that he won’t be coming back when he promised that he would. She’s getting lost in her work as a means of coping with the Halstead drama, but it can only do so much.

That’s why personal friendships and dynamics are more crucial than ever for her.

Are Upton and Voight friends on Chicago PD?

During a recent interview with Variety, actor Jason Beghe reflected on Upton’s current state, and revealed that his character, Hank Voight is going to be the one who she gets closest to during the back end of season 10.

"“We have had more intimate moments, and when I say intimate, I mean personal revelations”, Beghe revealed. “One thing that Voight insists on and admires — and it’s hard for his team to do — is he always wants you to be you. Don’t be me. He doesn’t want a team of Voights.”"

The importance of finding a better path lines up with the arc that Voight has undergone over the last few seasons. He started season 10 on the warpath due to the tragic death of Anna Avalos (Carmela Zumbado), but he quickly realized that strong-arming informants and cutting corners weren’t creating the results he wanted. He’s trying to be more honest, and he wants to ensure that Upton doesn’t fall down the morally compromised rabbit hole that he did.

There’s also a sense of trust and honesty that’s developed between the two cops. Halstead was previously Voight’s closest confidante (at least, for a time), and now it seems that Upton has been the one to take over that spot.

"“Hailey, even though they might clash, she stands up for herself and isn’t afraid to say who she is and what she thinks”, Beghe added. “So that creates trust. It can create some tension but it does create trust.”"

The more Upton comes to grips with her marriage being irreparably damaged, the more she may have to rely on friends like Voight to get her through it.
