Chicago Fire: When is Severide coming back to the 51?

Kelly Severide is stepping away from Chicago Fire. It was recently confirmed that the actor who plays him, Taylor Kinney, will be missing several episodes due to a personal matter. The details were not made public, but it was confirmed that the decision was made somewhat last minute.

This will have a significant impact on the trajectory of season 11. For one, Severide is one of the main characters, and arguably the anchor of the entire ensemble cast. There’s also the fact that he’s at the forefront of several plot threads that have been developed so far.

What does the show have in store for Severide’s absence? When will he return? Let’s discuss.

Is Severide leaving Chicago Fire in 2023?

Unfortunately, it the details surrounding Kinney’s return to the show remain as hazy as the details surrounding his departure. Fox News stated that representatives for both the show and the actor have declined to comment on what the “personal matter” in question is, which is understandable.

That said, the length of Kinney’s absence can only be measured by the severity of the personal matter. As it stands, the actor could be gone for five episodes or fifteen episodes depending on what occurs. We wish him all the best in his personal life.

The writing staff will have to rework several of the scripts for upcoming episodes to account for Severide’s absence. This will be interesting to see play out, as several episodes have already been filmed, and others are currently in production. It’s not yet clear if the actor will leave as soon as the show returns in February, or if it will take a few weeks to lay the groundwork for his departure.

If scheduling allows, we could see the producers and writers trying to orchestrate a storyline in which Severide is absent for the rest of season 11, and then returns during the season finale, or sends word to Kidd that he will be coming back. It would work dramatically, and give fans a sense of comfort heading into the next year.

That said, only time and real-life events will dictate how things play out.
