Chicago PD: Will Halstead ever come back to Chicago?
Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) may have left Chicago PD several episodes ago, but his status remains at the heart of season 10. He was supposed to be gone for eight months, but as we all found out, he extended his stay out of the country and will now be gone for an undetermined time.
Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) is understandably shattered by this, and the question she will have to entertain moving forward is whether or not Halstead will come back at all. Will the character just stay where he is? Will he ever show his face in the Windy City again?
Is Jesse Lee Soffer coming back to Chicago PD?
The chances of seeing Halstead again are growing slim with each new bit of information. First, there’s the fact that there are no immediate plans to write the character back into the show. In a recent interview with TV Insider, showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed that the character will stay remain on the outs for the rest of season 10.
Then there’s the fact that Halstead’s actions are doing irreparable damage to his marriage. He not only has avoided Upton’s phone calls, but he extended his stay in Central America without sharing the news with her. It’s clear things have changed since the episode he left, when he promised he would be back. That, or he was simply lying to her, which does not seem the case given the acting displayed in the scene.

Jesse Lee Soffer remains a force on the creative side, as he will be directing an upcoming episode, but he’s made it clear that he’s focusing exclusively behind-the-scenes work. Some theorize that Soffer was forced out of the show as a means of cutting salary costs, per Screen Rant, but there’s been very little evidence to back this claim up.
Regardless of the cause, we’re skeptical that Halstead will show his face in Chicago again. It seems like the show is gearing us up for an offscreen tragedy involving the character, or at least a divorce that takes place over the phone/off screen. We don’t want this to be the case, but all signs point towards that direction.
