Severide (Taylor Kinney) is going to be MIA during the second half of Chicago Fire season 11. The character has already been confirmed to have been written out of whatever episodes have been scripted, though it’s not yet clear why or when he will be leaving.

Fans have speculated as to why Severide would step away, especially given the unique constraints of the show. The writers aren’t permanently writing a character out, as Severide will come back, so they need a reason that’s just serious to sideline him, yet easy to resolve when the character is set to come back. Not easy.

Who plays Severide’s mom on Chicago Fire?

One direction the writers could go, of course, is Severide’s family. He had a complicated dynamic with his late father, Benny (Treat Williams), and a temperamental one with his mom Jennifer (Kim Delaney). The latter was last seen talking to Severide on the day of his wedding, implying that things are currently good between them.

If Jennifer were to fall ill or need Severide’s help we could see the character leaving his 51 position for a brief period of time. It would be an effective way to make sure he was out of town, while at the same time staying true to his character.

Severide has always prioritized the people in his life that matter, so it would make sense that he would put his career on a brief hiatus to be with his family. It may even benefit the ongoing story between him and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), which has been fraught in its own way.

The couple were last seen arguing over their differing opinions in the firehouse, and Kidd went as far as to suggest that they shouldn’t work as closely together as they have been. We know that the couple are headed for some rough waters emotionally, so maybe some time away to think about what can be improved upon will do them some good.

Jennifer Sheridan has only appeared in four episodes of Chicago Fire over the years, but Kim Delaney has been able to give the character such emotional depth that she’s left a big impression on both Severide and the viewers.
