Big changes ahead for Severide. The Chicago Fire mainstay is going to miss a handful of episodes because the actor who plays him, Taylor Kinney, needs to deal with a personal matter. Due to the suddenness of Kinney’s exit, though, the writers will have to concoct a way to get the character on the sidelines.

Representatives for both the show and the actor have been quiet, which suggests that they have yet to figure out the onscreen reason for Severide’s absence. Based on what the character has had to go through, and the storylines that have been teased, there are a couple viable options.

One possible direction the writers could go in is to give Severide a different job title.

Is Severide going to quit the 51 on Chicago Fire?

The character has always showcased a knack for detection, as evidenced by the episodes in which he teamed up with Lt. Wendy Seager (Andy Allo). He knows what to look for, and how to deal with suspects when the circumstances surrounding a fire look suspicious.

Seager has raised the possibility of Severide leaving his position with the 51 and switching over to become part of the OFI, or the Office of Fire Investigation. The OFI, true to its name, doesn’t help to put out fires but looks into their origin after the fact.

Because the OFI is an organization that’s been well-established in the show, but is also one that operates offscreen, it may be a good explanation for Severide’s upcoming absence. Perhaps he will be commissioned to help out with a serious case, or need to take time away from the 51 to solve a particularly tricky blaze.

Variety made it clear that Severide would not be gone for good, though the outlet did neglect to mention when he would return. It seems like the character will miss the bulk of season 11, but will hopefully re-enter the mix next year. Do you think we will see the OFI get involved again?
