Relationship troubles are rampant on Chicago PD. Burgess (Marina Squerciati) and Burzek (Patrick John Flueger) have had their share of issues in season 10, but they pale in comparison to what’s been going on between Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer).

The newly married couple have seemingly crumbled since Halstead decided to quit the force and leave for Central America. Upton has done her best to keep the lines of communication open, but all Halstead has done is amplify the distance by refusing to call her.

Things reached a breaking point in the new episode, when Upton found out that Halstead has increased the amount of time he’d be gone without letting her know first. It was one of the most heartbreaking moments we’ve seen on the show in a long time.

Is Halstead going to divorce Upton on Chicago PD?

The question, of course, is whether Upton and Halstead can come back from this. We all want them to get back to being the couple we know and loved from seasons 8 and 9, but the worse things get the harder it’s going to be to achieve that.

The “D” word may seem dramatic, but all signs point to it being in the character’s future. By the “D” word we mean, of course, divorce. Tracy Spiridakos was asked about the possibility of there being a split down the line, and she told Variety that it’s definitely on the table.

“She still considers herself married”, she said, before shifting focus to her character’s wedding ring. “I think her taking it off, I’m sure there will be a moment that will come. I assume that’s coming. I’m interested to see what that will be like. Is that a goodbye? Is that self preservation?”

The debate over whether it will be self preservation to move on is a fascinating one, especially given the countless times Halstead had been there to support Upton in the past. In a case of supreme irony, the time she needs him most is the time he’s causing the strife.

Divorce may not arrive in the next few episodes, but given the direction season 10 is going, we wouldn’t be surprised to see Upton make the decision before the finale.
