Will Severide (Taylor Kinney) walk away from the 51? The character is going to be leaving Chicago Fire for a bit, but we still don’t know what the circumstances under which he’ll be leaving will be.

Will he be fired or perhaps suffer an injury? Will he change departments? Will he decide to quit after a decade plus of service at the 51?

There’s lots to consider, but we want to take a look at character’s current relationship with the 51 and what it could mean for the future.

Is Severide quitting the 51 on Chicago Fire?

At this point in time, there is actually some incentive for Severide to take a step back and work in a different field. Things got heated between him and Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) during a recent episode, and it was suggested (by Kidd) that maybe they shouldn’t work as closely anymore.

Severide seemed pretty affected by this comment, and while it wasn’t intended to be a reason for his exit at the time (Kinney announced he would be stepping away after the episode aired), it could be spun into being a reason retroactively.

We could definitely see a world where Severide takes some time away from the 51 and embraces a role at the OFI as a means of giving Kidd what she wants. It would lead to some marital strife, for sure, but it might be the thing the couple needs to rekindle their relationship.

It would also function as a way to keep Severide close and in the world of the 51 without having to send him out of town or fabricate a more elaborate reason as to why he isn’t being seen. If we know he’s solving cases nearby, we can rest easier.

There’s always the possibility that Severide continues to work at the 51, and the show pretends as though he’s there even though he isn’t being shown. It might strain the believability of the viewer, especially if Kinney is gone for a long time, so doubt the showrunners will go this route.

Time will tell.
