The road ahead is going to be bumpy for Chicago Fire. It’s never easy to part ways with a main character, and while Severide (Taylor Kinney) is fully expected to return, the uncertainty of his time away makes it tough for the writing team.

Given the similarities between Severide’s situation and that of PD‘s Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer), some fans have likened the two and voiced concern over the handling of the former.

Is Severide still married to Kidd on Chicago Fire?

It’s no big secret that some PD fans have been let down by the Halstead arc, especially the handling of his marriage to Upton (Tracy Spiridakos). Will the same thing happen to Severide?

It’s a valid concern. Severide, like Halstead, had been in a seasons-long romance with another cast member, and finally tied the knot in spectacular fashion last year. The Severide and Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) wedding served as the season 10 finale, and implied that they would be looking at a long and fruitful life together.

Things aren’t going to made easy with Severide’s impending absence. There has already been some tension between them in recent episodes, but the fact that one half of the couple will be MIA for potentially a full half-season will undoubtedly lead to some questions about their union.

The fact that Halstead left Upton behind to fight drug cartels was one thing, but the fact that he extended his Central American stay without telling her was another. It felt like a surprisingly cold act from a character who was oftentimes defined by his empathy.

We hope that the One Chicago team has taken note of the way that fans have reacted to the handling of the Halstead arc, and apply these notes to the writing of the Severide arc. There’s a way to challenge and explore the Stellaride relationship without shattering it completely, and so we hope that’s where things ultimately lean when Severide does leave.
