Brett (Kara Killmer) and Casey (Jesse Spencer) have had a difficult year. The Chicago Fire couple went from being in a happy relationship to trying long distance to calling things off. Now they are both single and looking to move on with their lives… maybe?

The jury is still out on whether Brettsey will get back together in the end. They definitely have left a big impact on each other, and Brett even speaks to the ways in which she still has feelings for Casey even though they’re apart.

Are Brett and Casey getting back together?

The thing is, though, the specifics of Brett’s comments were a little confusing. They didn’t exactly jibe with the romance that we saw unfold over multiple seasons. Is the show attempt to retcon their relationship or was it a simple mistake?

The exchange in question happened in the episode “The Man of the Moment”. Brett reflects on her time with Casey and claims that it was “love at first sight”. The thing is, the characters didn’t act that way at the time. We knew both Brett and Casey when they were getting to know each other, and there wasn’t anything that overtly implied that they would be a couple down the line.

Their romance was one that took several seasons and several character-building moments to get to. It’s not a bad thing; it’s actually one of the things that make the Brettsey romance such a good part of the show.

The other odd part of Brett claiming that it “love at first sight” is that Casey was married to Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymund) at the time. They were married, and while they eventually divorced, it was pretty clear that we as viewers were meant to buy into their romance.

There are a couple different explanations for this line. One, the writers weren’t really thinking much of it when they wrote it, and felt that it didn’t change much in retrospect. There’s also the possibility that it was purposeful, and meant to evoke the rose-tinted glasses that Brett has on whenever she thinks of Casey.

Chicago Fire has generally been pretty good with continuity, and avoiding retconning character backstories, so we will give them the benefit of the doubt. It definitely seems like we’ll be getting more Brettsey material in the future.
