We’re getting closer to Severide (Taylor Kinney) leaving. We know it’s only a matter of time before the character leaves Chicago Fire (for a little while, at least), and we aren’t really sure what the cause will be. Will be go on a leave of absence? Will he sustain a serious injury?

Or, will it have to do with the hot-headed newbie at the 51, Sam Carver (Jake Lockett)? Carver has had a chaotic run on the show so far, bumping heads with several of his superiors, despite being a hero in the field.

Are Severide and Carver leaving the 51?

Carver got into a heated exchange with Severide’s wife, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), in the latest episode of Fire, but Severide was surprisingly even-keeled in his response. He even suggested that maybe Carver just needs more time to adjust. Kidd did not agree.

In fact, Kidd went as far as to suggest that Severide transfer him to another fire station. “If you don’t think he’s the right man for 51 longterm, I know Boden would respect your decision to transfer him out”, she said. “So would I.”

Severide seems a bit taken aback by the severity of Kidd’s words, but it definitely seems like an angle that the Fire writers plan to explore in coming weeks. Carver has a strained yet close bond with Kidd at this point, and it sounds like Severide may end up making a professional call for a personal reason. The reason, of course, being Kidd’s request.

There’s already been some tension between Severide and Kidd in the workplace, with the latter suggesting that maybe they shouldn’t work as closely due to their differing approaches. It’s a topic that keeps coming up throughout season 11, and one that may serve as a useful springboard into Severide’s exit.

It’ll be interesting to see whether Severide ends up transferring Carver, or perhaps even going with Carver to another station for a brief period of time. He may decide that the time away from Kidd will be good for their marriage, and he’d get a chance to mentor/keep an eye on Carver to boot.

Now Severide and Carver haven’t had a ton of scenes together, but there seems to be an innate respect between them. Hopefully we get to see their professional dynamic develop before one of them leaves the 51.
