Cindy Herrmann (Robyn Coffin) was dealt a devastating blow when she was diagnosed with cancer. She underwent surgery to get most of it removed, but the doctor informed her that they were entirely successful, and were going to have to resort to chemotherapy. It was a surprising development for one of Chicago Fire‘s most even-keel characters.

Not much has been said about Cindy since her diagnosis was made clear, as the show has had to contend with the growing strain between Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) and Carver (Jake Lockett), as well as the impending departure of Severide (Taylor Kinney).

Nevertheless, the latest episode of Chicago Fire, “Run Like Hell” shed some light on how Cindy is doing.

Does Herrmann’s wife have cancer on Chicago Fire?

The episode opens with Christopher Herrmann (David Eigenberg) comforting his wife and asking how she’s feeling after one of her chemotherapy sessions. She jokes about wanting a drink but its evident that she’s exhausted from the treatment.

Herrmann then promises to get Cindy “everything she asked for at the firehouse”, which isn’t really clarified before the rest of the story unfolds. All we get is a pleased response from Cindy, who says “You better.”

Throughout the episode, Herrmann can be seen chatting up different characters at the 51 and asking them questions about their lives in very uncharacteristic fashion. Herrmann is not really one for making small talk, despite being the owner of a pub.

The rest of the 51 notices Herrmann’s chattier nature, and wonder aloud whether he’s doing it as a means of coping with his anxiety over Cindy’s condition. It makes sense from that perspective, and nobody confronts him about it as a result.

The twist at the end of the episode, though, is that Herrmann chatting his co-workers up was the very thing that Cindy was asking for. She wanted to hear what was going on at the firehouse, and the typically reticent Herrmann went out of his way to collect all the gossip he could for her.

It’s a sweet reveal, and it shows that the couple’s marriage is stronger than ever, despite having to deal with a life-threatening illness. Nicely played, Chicago Fire writers.
