Where did he go? We knew that Severide (Taylor Kinney) was going to be missing during the second half of Chicago Fire season 11, but it initially seemed as though he’d return before the finale. His plan, at least as we understood it, was to take the arson investigation program in Alabama and then come back with a new certification.

Unfortunately, things have gotten complicated. Very complicated. While Severide is still assumed to be returning at some point, it has been confirmed that the character will not be appearing in the season 11 finale. Furthermore, the information we have been getting about him through the other characters suggest he’ll be gone longer than we thought (or hoped).

What happened to Severide on Chicago Fire?

Cruz (Joe Minoso) let it slip that Severide is no longer in the arson investigation program, or the state of Alabama for that matter. He found out that Severide impressed the trainers running the program that they decided to bring him onboard to work a legitimate ATF case. The location of the case is unknown.

The kicker, of course, is that Severide’s wife, Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), knew nothing about this. The last she heard, he was still training in the Yellowhammer State. She tried to hide her surprise when Cruz broke the news, but it was clear as a viewer that she was disappointed.

It’s disheartening to find out that Severide is keeping information from Kidd, especially after all the things they’ve been through. Sure, they’ve had rough patches before, like when Kidd was on the road and not being communicative with Severide, but it seemed as though the two of them had gotten past that stage.

Severide, as was previously mentioned, will not be returning for the season 11 premiere, but we’re hoping to get some additional information about his whereabouts, and perhaps even a discussion between him and Kidd that sets the record straight on where they stand. If not, it’s going to be an even longer wait for season 12…
