3 Chicago PD characters who left the show unexpectedly
Chicago PD is no stranger to shocking exits. The procedural drama has been dealing with the fallout of one in season 10: Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). We won’t be including Halstead in our rankings here, because plans to write the character off were revealed before it actually happened onscreen.
Still, there are plenty of examples of characters who seemed destined to last on the show, only for them to exit in sudden and shocking fashion. We decided to break top the three Chicago PD exits that still haunt us to this day.
Why did Erin Lindsay leave Chicago PD?
Erin Lindsay (Sophia Bush) was invaluable to the first couple seasons of Chicago PD. She was arguably the second-most important character on the show, behind her surrogate father figure, Hank Voight (Jason Beghe). As season four rolled around, though, it was revealed that Lindsay would be changing careers and leaving for the East Coast. Poof, gone.
Not only was the departure shocking, but it left Halstead with very little closure. The had been a couple, and all signs pointed to Halstead popping the question of marriage at some point, but we never got to see it happen. There’s a certain level of irony at play here, since Halstead has left and frozen out Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) in similar fashion.
Why did Antonio Dawson leave Chicago PD?
Talk about exits that stung. Antonio Dawson (Jon Seda) was one of the beloved characters on PD, and the fact that he was written off offscreen is something that’s still tough to get over. It felt like there was so much more to dig into with his character, especially given that the reason for his exit was a drug relapse.

The story goes that Seda and the writers disagreed on what direction to take Dawson moving ahead, so the decision was made to just axe the character outright. We’re still maintaining hope that we get to see Dawson return and shed some light on what he’s been up to.
Why did Greg “Mouse” Gerwitz leave Chicago PD?
A bit of left field pick. Greg “Mouse” Gerwitz (Samuel Hunt) was a supporting character during the first few seasons of PD, and he always provided the likes of Halstead with useful tech info. He was one of those characters you take for granted and assume he’s always going to be around, so when he decided to re-enlist in the Army Rangers it definitely surprised us.
It also surprised Halstead, who bonded with Mouse over their shared Ranger experience. Now he’s putting his skills to use in Central America. Chicago PD, like life, can be funny sometimes.
