Chicago Med has seen some major changes in season 8. There are twists and turns in the lives of the characters, sure, but season 8 has outright say goodbye to several characters we have gotten to know over the years.

Because Med has added a host of newcomers to make up for it, we thought it’d be a good time to look back at these exits and reassess why they happened– and whether the characters in question will be coming back at some point.

Here are 3 Chicago Med characters who decided to take off during season 8.

Why did Dylan Scott leave Chicago Med?

This one was tough. Dylan Scott (Guy Lockard) was a likable and empathetic presence at Gaffney, no doubt aided by years of police work in the Windy City. Unfortunately, his police past came back to haunt him when he was dragged into an undercover case gone wrong.

Scott’s attempts to protect a fellow officer went awry, and led to the officer’s death in the season 8 premiere. The guilt he felt over the death was severe, and he decided to leave Chicago altogether to put it behind him. We don’t blame the reasoning, but he will be missed.

Why did Vanessa Taylor leave Chicago Med?

Vanessa Taylor (Asjha Cooper) was a steady presence on Chicago Med, grounding the other characters who engaged in drama more often. Given her youth, Taylor also seemed poised to last for a long time at Gaffney, and potentially even rise up the ranks. She clearly had different ideas.

In season 8 episode 6, Taylor decided to leave Gaffney to work at a clinic in the Philippines. Taylor tells her mother, Maggie (Marlyne Barrett), that she will defer finishing her residency for the time being, and help people in a different part of the world. The door seems wide open for her to return at some point in the future.

Why did Ethan Choi leave Chicago Med?

This one was bittersweet. Ethan Choi (Brian Tee) is a Med centerpiece, so losing him was always going to be tough. The writing team did a great job of giving him a satisfying sendoff in the mid-season finale, though. Choi finally married April (Yaya DaCosta), and together they will open up a clinic in Chicago to help those who are less fortunate.

While Tee will return to direct an episode of Med, it’s unclear whether we will see the character of Choi return to Gaffney. Given that he’s still working in the city, we will keep our fingers crossed.
