Yes, Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer) is coming back to Chicago Fire. The beloved character, who left halfway through season 10, will once again be walking through the halls of the 51 and saving lives. We’re not sure how or when or why, but we know it will be happening soon thanks to Variety.

The last time we heard from Casey was the season 11 premiere, and it was not under happy circumstances. Brett (Kara Killmer), his long-distance girlfriend, decided that she wanted to split up rather than prolong their relationship and watch the magic fade. Casey agreed, and they went their separate ways.

Are Casey and Brett going to date again on Chicago Fire?

At least, for the time being. Brett took a little while to get over Casey, and eventually started dating again. She struck up a relationship with a guy named Dylan (Christopher Allen), and while it was far from a defining romance, it was pleasant and ultimately more stable than what she had before.

All bets are off now. Casey coming back to the 51 spells romantic drama for both him and Brett. It’s obvious the two characters mean a lot to each other, to the extent that marriage seemed to be in the air at one point, so it’ll be very difficult for them to resist the urge to get back together.

Brett has her thing going with Dylan, but Killmer and showrunner Derek Haas have spoken about the intense feelings she still has for Casey, and how she will have to reckon with them eventually. Casey’s return means we’ll be getting that reckoning a lot sooner than anybody expected.

Brett has kept a low-profile throughout most of season 11, compared to her leading several of the storylines in seasons prior. The arrival of Casey will almost certainly change that, and force her to assess whether the new, improved version of her wants to dip back into the old relationship.

Then she’ll have to contend with already being in a relationship. Who knows, Casey may also be in a relationship when he returns to the 51, which means he will be attempting long-distance twice. We can’t wait to see where things go.
