3 Chicago Fire characters we didn’t expect to return in 2023
Chicago Fire has had lots of character departures over the years. Any show that’s been on the air for a decade plus is destined to. The silver lining, of course, is being able to bring characters back and incorporate them into storylines in fun and unexpected ways.
Chicago Fire has done a great job of that in season 11. We’ve seen the departure of key players like Severide (at least, briefly), but we’ve been treated to the return of major players who will guide the direction of the show moving forward.
To commemorate the return of a certain character who will definitely be making our list, here’s a rundown of the three Chicago Fire returns that surprised us the most!
Did Emma Jacobs return to Chicago Fire season 11?
Our picks run in chronological order, meaning we have to discuss the resurfacing of one Emma Jacobs (Caitlin Carver). Jacobs was one of the most reviled characters in recent Fire history, and the fact that she tried to manipulate a character (Hawkins) who has gone on to gain even more love after his death seals her fate as an all-time antagonist.
Her return to Fire led to a renewed beef with Violet (Hanako Greensmith), which makes sense given the attempted blackmail incident in season 10. Jacobs has only appeared in season 11 one time, but given the the ominous nature of her last scene, we’re inclined to think that she will be back.
Did Wendy Seager return to Chicago Fire season 11?
We’re a bit more excited about this one. Seager (Andy Allo) has always be an interesting presence on the show, and watching her grow beyond her dynamic with Severide (Taylor Kinney) is a very promising direction to go in. That’s not even mentioning her recently unveiled romance with Sam Carver (Jake Lockett), a subplot that do wonders to flesh out both of their characters.

It’s unclear how big a role Seager will play throughout the rest of season 11, but the implication seems to be that she be elevated to a recurring role for the first time in a couple years. Especially if things with Carver get more serious– which, as of right now, remains to be seen.
Did Casey return to Chicago Fire season 11?
This is the nuclear bomb that was dropped on fans. Severide may be gone, but the Fire loyal will be treated to the return of one Matthew Casey (Jesse Spencer), well before any of us expected it. It’s an exciting reveal, for sure, and the writers will have a field day explaining his return, addressing the fallout of his decision to come back, and his past with Brett (Kara Killmer).
The Brett angle is definitely going to be the most interesting thread to follow in season 11, especially when you factor in Brett’s current relationship with Dylan (Christopher Allen). She’s done a lot to try and get over Casey, so the fact that he’s returning on the heels of all of this is going to lead to some juicy dramatic moments.
