We’ve been waiting patiently for a One Chicago crossover. It’s been several years since all three shows had a connecting storyline, and for many fans, the crossovers remain some of the best episodes in the franchise’s history.

There were plans for a crossover event last year, but the scheduling changes that had to be made as a result of COVID meant it was dead in the water. The delay meant that things had to be pushed back to 2023, but we’re more than halfway through the season for Med, Fire, and PD and have yet to hear any more details. What gives? Are we still getting a crossover event this year?

When is the One Chicago crossover episode?

Let’s start with the comments made by cast and crew. In December 2022, Chicago PD star Marina Squerciati took to social media to post a photo from the set. The only thing was, the set she was on was Chicago Med, and she captioned the photo “First day back and I came to the wrong show.” She also used the hashtags “#crossover” and “#wereback”, which sparked excitement over the possibility of a three-part story.

Squerciati did turn out to be a teasing a crossover, but it was only between PD and Med and it only took up a few minutes of screen time. Other quasi-crossovers have happened in 2023, including a team up between PD‘s Trudy Platt (Amy Morton) and Fire‘s Severide (Taylor Kinney), so it’s not like fans are being frozen out of crossovers completely, but there’s something special about seeing a story that incorporates all three shows and allows for an Avengers-like approach.

The last showrunner to speak on the chances of a crossover was Fire‘s Andrea Newman. She talked about the story ideas that have been thrown around for a possible three-part event, and she ruled out one that had been rumored involving Violet (Hanako Greensmith) and her family.

“Right now, there are no plans to do a family-related story for Violet with a connection to Med,” Newman told TV Line. “But we love when we have characters that can cross over to both shows, so who knows what will happen in the future!”

While it’s somewhat encouraging to know that stories are being weeded out, presumably so the writers can decide on what the actual story will be, it also means that the story is currently undecided, so fans will have to keep on waiting for a bit. At this point, given the individual subplots for each show, it’s unlikely that we will keep the hallowed crossover during the current season. We will keep our fingers crossed.
