It’s easy to spot a bad wig. Fans of Chicago Fire have been doing it for several seasons now, as Wendy Seager (Andy Allo) is clearly wearing a wig during her first dozen appearances. Not only is the wig itself obvious, but it’s stylistically very different from the hairstyle that Allo sports when she’s not on camera.

At least, that was the case. Things have changed in season 11. The promo photos for episode 16 have been released, and they show Seager wearing a short, bleach blonde hairstyle that is miles away from the brunette look we’re used to.

What caused the change? Does this speak to something deeper about the character?

Well, for one, it’s an improvement. One Chicago fans have dedicated entire Reddit threads to how bad the Seager wig is, and little could be said in its defense. It’s possible that the showrunners and Allo simply decided to go with her natural hair as a means of quelling the fans who felt she had been done dirty by the show’s stylist.

On a deeper level, though, the haircut represents the characters turning a corner. She was always tied to Severide in her previous storylines, but now she’s independent of him and engaging with other members of the 51 in interesting ways.

She’s currently hooking up with Carver (Jake Lockett) and the aforementioned promo photos find her sitting down with Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo), Violet Mikami (Hanako Greensmith) and Sylvie Brett (Kara Killmer).

The Seager role has been officially elevated, so it makes sense to want to give the character something distinct to illustrate this change. We can’t wait to see this change through.
