We were so close! Jesse Lee Soffer made a triumphant comeback to Chicago PD this week, directing the episode “Deadlocked.” The episode was tense, well-acted and fast-paced, proving that Soffer has a bright future when it comes to working behind the camera.

The kicker is, we almost got more. Talking with Deadline after the episode’s release, Soffer revealed that he considered making a cameo onscreen! While it may not make sense, given that Jay Halstead is out of the country, Soffer explained that he would have been playing someone else.

Did Jesse Lee Soffer return to Chicago PD?

“There are a couple of screens where I thought about doing that”, he admitted. “Like, what if I just walked through the background with my back to the camera? Would someone know it was me? There are a couple of scenes where I’m literally right around the corner from where they’re filming, watching on the monitors. So, I am sort of there.”

It’s a tantalizing notion, Soffer just offscreen, when it feels like fans have been pulling for his return since the beginning of season 10. There were definitely pockets of the One Chicago fandom who theorized that Halstead might return in the 200th episode, or the episode that Soffer directed and yet both turned out to be untrue.

The 200th episode was a surprisingly insular affair, especially compared to the cameo-filled, retrospective approach that Chicago Fire took with theirs. PD opted for a standalone episode that shunned any of these bigger legacy themes, and the reaction was mixed. Halstead wasn’t even mentioned in the episode.

The good news is that Soffer hasn’t closed the door on returning as Halstead. When the outlet asked him about returning to the character that made him famous, he said: “You know, I love Halstead and he’s definitely a part of me. I had so much fun playing him, too, so never say never.”
