Jesse Lee Soffer not ‘opposed’ to returning to Chicago PD
The speculation over Jay Halstead continues. The character made an exit at the top of Chicago PD‘s tenth season, and yet his absence still casts a long shadow over his wife, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spirikdaos) and the rest of the IU.
The actor who plats Halstead, Jesse Lee Soffer, recently directed an episode of Chicago PD, and given his maintained proximity with the show, it makes sense that outlet would ask him about the chances of him returning in front of the camera.
Are we going to see Halstead in the future? Will Soffer appear in the next episode he directs?
Is Halstead coming back to Chicago PD 2023?
Soffer discussed the challenges of moving from acting to directing during a recent interview with TV Insider. He’s spent years watching the efforts of PD directors, asking questions and taking note of certain tricks, before deciding he was ready to attempt an episode on his own.
When asked whether he would consider appearing in front of the camera and directing at the same time, Soffer said that he would welcome the challenge.
"“I wouldn’t be opposed to it. It would be interesting,” he admitted. “I’m sure it would be a really difficult kind of task to have to do both things at once. And would you do playback and watch the take or would you just trust your first AD that you got it or whatever you needed? That’d be tricky, but not opposed to the challenge.”"

It was a welcoming revelation from Soffer, given that he could very well return to PD to direct future episodes. The flip side of the coin, however, is the fact that he couldn’t provide any insight into the future of his character, or the character’s marriage to Upton.
When asked if he could provide any solace for PD fans who are struggling with the crumbling of the Halstead and Upton marriage, Soffer plead the fifth. “There’s nothing I can say”, he affirmed. That is completely out of my hands and out of my wheelhouse now. I’m sorry. Yeah, nothing I can do.”
An encouraging revelation and a not-so-encouraging revelation from the former PD star! We hope one of these comes true and the other is merely a case of keeping crucial plot details under wraps.
