The line between fantasy and reality can sometimes be difficult to gage. A storyline involving a character can be echoed in real life, and vice versa, though viewers rarely find out in the moment. This what some viewers theorize what’s going on with Cindy Herrmann on Chicago Fire.

A rumor has surfaced that the cancer storyline involving Cindy stems from the real-life health issues of the actress who plays her: Robyn Coffin. Is Cindy’s cancer diagnosis real? Is Coffin also dealing with chemotherapy treatments off screen?

Does Robyn Coffin have cancer on Chicago Fire?

While Coffin is one of the more private cast members on Chicago Fire, there is nothing to suggest that she is sick or battling health issues similar to her character. None of her co-stars, or the Fire showrunners have hinted at overlapping similarities, either, which leads us to believe that the rumor is categorically false.

To be fair, there’s a precedent for a character’s cancer diagnosis manifesting in real life. On Chicago Med, the character Maggie Lockwood (Marlyne Barrett) had a multi-season storyline involving her cancer diagnosis, only for the actress who played her to announce that she was battling cancer a few years later.

Barrett, who announced that she had uterine and ovarian cancer, spoke on the similarities between her journey and the character’s journey, and how continuing to appear on the show is giving her a sense of normalcy amidst the chemotherapy treatments.

“We as human beings are so scared to face the mortality of life, or to even pronounce the word cancer,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “But we have so much more strength inside of us than we think.”

Unless Coffin comes out and confirms that she is dealing with a cancer diagnosis of her own, it’s safe to assume that she is healthy as ever. If anything, the rumor that she’s sick is a testament to how convincing and heartbreaking her performance on Chicago Fire is!
