Is Matt Casey coming back to Chicago Fire 2023?

Casey is coming back! We didn’t think it would be happening so soon, but the beloved character will be back in the mix on Chicago Fire. Several outlets have confirmed the news, and the latest episode of Fire hinted at the impending return.

In a tender scene between Herrmann (David Eigenberg) and Chief Boden (Eamonn Walker), the former reveals that Casey has been keeping tabs on his wife’s battle with cancer. “I heard Cindy talking to him again yesterday. It really cheered her up”, Herrmann revealed. “I think she’s always had a little crush on him, to be honest.”

Is Matt Casey returning to Chicago Fire?

It’s both a sweet moment and smart way to re-establish Casey as a force within the world of One Chicago. The character has always been at the center of the action, and remains one of the most popular in the entire franchise. Bringing him back is not just a cool reveal, it’s a major shake-up to the show’s storyline.

Casey, played by Jesse Spencer, will be returning to the show on Wednesday, April 5. It’s believed that he will only be present for a single episode, though it’s unclear if he will continue to return to the show in a sort of glorified cameo capacity. It’ll be interesting to find out what he’s been up to since moving to Oregon, and why he is back in the Windy City for a limited time.

Then there’s the Brettsey of it all. Casey and Brett (Kara Killmer) decided to break up at the top of the season, citing the long-distance aspect of their relationship as something they couldn’t keep up. Seeing them interact again is going to be a lot for fans, and it’ll be fun to see whether there’s still a spark between them. Could Casey’s return lead to them giving their romance another shot?

The downside, of course, is that Casey won’t get a chance to chop it up with his old friend Severide (Taylor Kinney). The character is currently enrolled in an arson investigation program, and taking a leave of absence from the 51.
