Chicago Fire gives shocking update on Casey’s career
Casey is back on Chicago Fire! The character, played by Jesse Spencer, will be making his long-awaited return to the show on April 12, and fans are understandably curious to find out what brings the character back to the Windy City.
Last we heard, Casey was living in Oregon so that the Darden boys could have a stable home life and school experience. The character promised to return to Chicago after they graduated high school, but that was still a multi-year commitment.
Is Casey still a firefighter on Chicago Fire?
So what changed? Why is Casey back in the mix so soon? Well, Spencer recently sat down with Deadline to fill in some of the blanks of his character’s backstory. He revealed that Casey has been working with some high-profile organizations, and that his return to Chicago is actually tied into his new career.
“Casey gets involved with the Department of Homeland Security in Oregon because there have been potential domestic terror attacks across the United States, something he discovers after finding evidence of where future attacks could take place,” Spencer revealed, in a shocking revelation.
Casey’s antics don’t slow down from there. The actor goes on to reveal that Casey gets involved with the FBI, the DHS and becomes a “special liaison for first responders in case these attacks do come to fruition.” This job leads Casey to travel the country and prep first responders so that they can be prepared in the field. His latest assignment, which conveniently brings him to Chicago, will be his most severe yet.

“He’s had a lot of serious missions before but this one concerns national security,” Spencer added. “He still considers Chicago home so, he has a special interest in coming back and picking his liaison there.”
We didn’t expect Casey’s year away from the 51 to be packed with some professional twists and turns, and we’re curious to see how it informs the character’s attitude towards his former co-workers. It’ll be intriguing to see how the character’s travel-based job is going to factor into the show’s decision to keep him around long-term, or merely have him return once in a while for a cameo role.
