Casey (Jesse Spencer) returned to Chicago Fire, and it was as messy as everyone thought it would be. The character showed up to the 51 unannounced, thrilling his former co-workers and shocking his former girlfriend, Brett (Kara Killmer).

Things were understandably tense from the onset, but as the episode “Danger Is All Around” wore on, the former couple got more comfortable with each other, and reminded fans why they were so good together in the first place. Are they headed for a reunion? Will Brettsey be resurrected?

Are Casey and Brett dating again on Chicago Fire?

The presence of Casey is going to play a big part in Brettsey’s future, and according to the actor who plays him, that presence will be limited. Spencer told Collider that there aren’t any plans to bring Casey back full-time, and that the character still has responsibilities to consider in his new life in Oregon.

“I think I’m always open to [returning permanently]. I never say never,” the actor noted. “But in terms of like long-term or something, I don’t think so.” It’s a disappointing bit of news to relay, but it makes sense given how recently he decided to leave the show.

The thing is, Casey’s absence doesn’t mean he won’t end up with Brett in the long run. There’s been lots of care put towards keeping their dynamic alive offscreen, and it’s very possible that when all is said and done, these two will end up together. Spencer told the outlet that he isn’t sure what the writers have in store for the two characters, but that he enjoys this uncertainty.

“The good thing is I don’t know, and I kind of like that,” he added. “I like that not knowing thing, if that’s actually a possibility in the future.” The biggest takeaway from these comments is that the Casey and Brett romance will NOT be revived in season 11, especially considering the fact that the latter is dating someone, but that the door isn’t completely closed on them linking back up in the future. Seems like a pretty fair trade off!
