For fans of Grey’s Anatomy, saying goodbye to beloved characters and actors has become somewhat of a regular occurrence.

Over the course of the show’s 19 seasons, there have been many casting shakeups on the show which is to be expected from a show that has been on for nearly two decades. While some exits are set up weeks or even months in advance, others have had a way of sneaking up on fans unexpectedly.

Because of this, whenever a character’s future at Grey Sloan Memorial comes into question on the show, fans become understandably curious to know whether they might be leaving. So when the recent promo for episode 13 revealed Maggie is being courted by another hospital, fans have begun to wonder whether they should be worried about Maggie’s future on the show.

Is Kelly McCreary leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

Sadly, Kelly McCreary is about to become the latest cast member to leave Grey’s Anatomy. After playing Maggie for the last nine years, McCreary has confirmed her departure from ABC’s long-running medical drama which means Maggie will be written off the show. McCreary’s final episode of the show is slated to air on Thursday, April 13.

Maggie’s exit storyline was first set up in the promo for season 19 episode 13, “Cowgirls Don’t Cry,” in which we found out Maggie had been offered a job at the Heart Center of Chicago. Considering the synopsis for her final episode teases “It’s Maggie’s last day,” it seems Maggie is going to accept the position and leave her job at Grey Sloan Memorial.

Why is Kelly McCreary leaving Grey’s Anatomy?

While many cast exits over the years on Grey’s Anatomy have been the result of creative decisions fueled by storylines, Kelly McCreay’s exit from the show is the result of McCreary simply being ready to move on from the show to pursue new opportunities.

As McCreary told Deadline, who first broke the news of her departure from the show, playing Maggie has been a dream come true but she’s ready to see what the future holds.

"“After nine seasons, I am saying goodbye to Maggie Pierce and her Grey Sloan family. It has been a tremendous honor to be a part of such a legendary television institution as Grey’s Anatomy. I will always be grateful to Shonda Rhimes, Krista Vernoff, and ABC for the opportunity, and to the incredible fans for their passionate support. To spend nine years exploring a character inside and out, while reaching a global audience with impactful stories, is a rare gift. It has afforded me an opportunity to collaborate with, learn from, and be inspired by countless brilliant artists both in front of and behind the camera. Playing Maggie Pierce has been one of the true joys of my life and I leave with profound gratitude for every step of this journey. I am excited for this next chapter, and what the future holds.”"

The good news is that the door is being left open for McCreary to return, and we’ll actually get the chance to see Maggie at least one more time after her final episode airs on April 13.
