Chicago Fire: Does Severide have kids on the show?

Severide (Taylor Kinney). The bad boy of Chicago Fire. Well, formerly. He’s settled down in recent seasons, but early on he was certainly the rebellious yin to the yang that was Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). Their dynamic was part of what made the show so special early on.

Severide has had several long-term romances over the years, and some have gotten serious. Now that he’s a married man, we figured we’d recap the eleven seasons he’s spent at the 51 and check on whether the firefighter has had any kids along the way.

Do Shay and Severide have a baby?

While the question may seem silly in 2023, it was a legitimate plot point for a while. Severide was trying to have a baby with Leslie Shay (Lauren German), during the first season of the show, and the finale revealed that his ex, Renée (Sarah Shahi), was several months pregnant.

In season 2, Severide decides to move in with Renée and essentially start their family. It was only after Shay raised the possibility of the baby not being his that he asked Renée to get a paternity test. Sure enough, the test came back negative: Severide was not the father. The reunion with Renée ends shortly after, despite her genuine surprise over the test results.

Unfortunately, the confusion over the paternity test put a halt to Severide’s attempt to give Shay a child. The friends had been attempting to get pregnant via In Vitro fertilization, but the drama, and Shay’s tragic, untimely death, kept it from ever happening.

Shay and Severide never have a child together, though they are appointed the godparents of Herrmann’s son. Severide goes into a bit of an emotional tailspin following the death of Shay, haphazardly marrying a woman he meets in Las Vegas, but the next major relationship arrives in the form of Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).

Severide and Kidd marry in the season 10 finale, and have not voiced any specific plans to have kids in the future. There are some rumors swirling that Kidd is going to get pregnant soon, but there hasn’t been anything to confirm this rumor from a narrative standpoint. We wouldn’t be surprised to see Severide become a father one day, but it definitely hasn’t happened yet.
