Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer) may be gone, but he never seems far. Despite leaving Chicago Fire in the middle of season 10, the character has continued to make cameo appearances and show that he’s very much involved in the lives of his former co-workers.

Casey made a high-profile appearance in season 11, shortly after it was confirmed that Severide (Taylor Kinney) would be taking a leave of absence from the job. It helped to smooth over the loss, but it also raised questions about Casey’s future. Will he be back in season 12?

Is Jesse Spencer coming back to Chicago Fire?

As of right now, there are no concrete plans to bring Casey back. He’s currently working at a fire station in Portland, and seems to be doing quite well there. There weren’t lingering professional issues at the end of his last episode, but the same can’t be said for the personal ones.

The relationship between Casey and Brett (Kara Killmer) seems unfinished, both in terms of how things left off and the way that it was implied they still have feelings for one another. As such, it would not surprise us to see Casey pop back up and attempt to address their break up.

Jesse Spencer, who decided to step back from the show to spend more time with his family, has been upfront about his relationship with the crew and showrunner Derek Haas, in particular, and how much he enjoys returning.

“There’s nothing like old friends, and at a workplace that can be a rarity,” he told TV Insider. “I really appreciate that show. I’ve had a soft spot for it, otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed for 10 years. So coming back is always nice.”

On the subject on Casey making an appearance in season 12, the actor was more vague but equally enthusiastic.

“I loved being back and popping in for an episode, but in terms of coming back full-time, I don’t know. It sort of [coincides] with how the character feels. I hope so, but we’ll have to see what the future holds for that one, for sure.”
