Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) is in a role reversal on Chicago Fire. In season 10, she was on the road while her husband Severide (Taylor Kinney) struggled with her absence. Now, Severide is the one who’s gone, and Kidd is having a difficult time getting used to it.

The character has visited Severide offscreen at least once, and discussed the visit with co-workers, but it remains to be seen when Severide will return, and how long he plans on staying if he decides to pursue a career path in arson investigation (the program he’s currently enrolled in).

Is Miranda Rae Mayo leaving Chicago Fire?

The handling of the Severide character has been based on the availability of the man who plays him: Taylor Kinney. The actor is taking a leave of absence from the show, but if he decides not to return, the writers are going to have to figure out a way to write him off the show in a plausible and realistic manner.

That’s why Kidd is in such a precarious situation. If Severide is written off the show, then the writers have to decide whether she divorces him, continues to be married to him offscreen, or decides to leave the show with him. All three of these options pose their pros and cons.

For one, the idea of losing Kidd and Severide in one fell swoop would be devastating. They are two of the show’s main characters, and it’s difficult to say whether Chicago Fire would survive in their absence. The “stay together offscreen” angle could be tricky as well, as evidenced by the Chicago PD decision to keep Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) and Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) together despite the latter being written off the show. The decision has not been warmly received by fans.

Ultimately, we think Chicago Fire will figure out a way to keep Kidd in the mix, regardless of what happens with Severide. She is too valuable an asset to write off, and Miranda Rae Mayo has not said anything that implies she is done with the character. Here’s hoping we get to have both of them around for the foreseeable future!
