It appears Jesse Spencer’s return wasn’t a one-off after all. As fans will recall, Spencer reprised his role as Captain Matt Casey in the eighteenth episode of the season. The assumption among fans at the time was that the return might be more than just a guest appearance, but then Casey left town once again at the end of the episode.
Well, it seems he’s going to be sticking around after all — or at the very least be appearing in one last episode this season.
While NBC has not yet confirmed what’s next for Casey, Spencer was spotted on location filming alongside costars including Miranda Rae Mayo during what appears to be production on scenes meant for the season 11 finale. Now, it’s important to note that Casey could end up popping up earlier than the finale as the photos originated from a fan and not directly from anyone affiliated with NBC. Still, the timing of the photo’s release does align with when the show was set to be filming the final episode of the season.
Casey’s return in the finale would make sense and lines up with two storylines from the finale synopsis that seems to foreshadow his return. In the finale synopsis, it is teased that “Brett waits for life-changing news” while “Kidd finds a new lead on the Homeland Security case.”
Given Casey’s return was connected to the Homeland Security case, it would make sense for him to return if Kidd got a break in the case. And his return could also hint at the life-changing news Brett is awaiting, after all if Casey were to consider moving back to Chicago it would create a lot of questions for Brett and her future.
Could Jesse Spencer rejoin the Chicago Fire cast in season 12?
Given that Jesse Spencer left Chicago Fire on good terms and has since returned on multiple occasions since his exit last season, there is always the chance he could return to the cast in a larger role in season 12.
It’s been hinted that Casey would return to Chicago when the time was right and with the Darden boys heading off to college soon, the door might soon open for Casey to return to Firehouse 51.

There’s also the fact that Taylor Kinney’s role on the show remains very much up in the air. Should Kinney by chance choose not to return as a series regular for season 12, bringing Spencer back as Casey would help fill that void and prevent the show from being without two of its original leading men.
Of course, we’ll have to wait until the finale arrives to know where things end and where season 12 could take us. Still, if any former cast member were to return in a larger capacity in season 12, Jesse Spencer seems like the most likely candidate.
