Casey (Jesse Spencer) is back! The character has missed the bulk of season 11, after leaving midway through season 10, but it’s been confirmed that he will be returning to Chicago Fire for the season finale. The confirmation of Casey’s involvement comes shortly after the character made an appearance in the episode “Danger Is All Around.”

While he’s been confirmed to appear in the finale, some fans may be wondering if Casey will be appearing in tonight’s episode. He has, after all, been reintroduced, so it wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility for him to show up in the episode “Take a Shot at the King.”

Is Jesse Spencer in tonight’s episode of Chicago Fire?

Unfortunately, this will not be the case. The synopsis for the episode does not include any reference to Casey being in the mix, and will instead focus on the core cast members. The  full synopsis reads as follows:

"Boden, Ritter, Herrmann and Kidd work together to take down a local politician responsible for a chemical fire; after his aunt’s accident, Gallo worries about their future; Brett steps in to perform Dylan’s magic show when he’s out of town."

This makes sense in terms of narrative. A big deal was made out of Casey’s return in the previous episode, but bringing him back too many times runs the risk of making his presence feel less special. Using the character sparingly will go a long way in keeping audiences invested.

Besides, Jesse Spencer has pushed back against the idea that he will return to the show on a full time basis. He didn’t rule it out entirely, but he did make it seem as though he was more interested in more of a cameo-based role than a legitimate return.

"“When I left the show, I talked to [co-showrunner] Derek [Haas] and everybody and said, ‘Listen, if it makes sense to bring me in for a storyline that you think would be appropriate for Casey to come in for, I’m happy to pop in for an episode’,” he explained to TV Line. “But in terms of like long-term or something, I don’t think so.”"

Casey being absent from “Take a Shot at the King” will also allow more screen time to be given to the main cast, so that their individual storylines can be wrapped up or at least developed before the finale.
