It’s been a while since Chicago PD fans have heard from Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer). The same can be said for his wife, Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), who has struggled to keep in touch with him since he decided to leave the country.

The episode “Fight” at last gave fans an update on the couple, and even included a Halstead cameo… sort of. The character did communicate over the phone and through text, which naturally led to speculation as to whether we’d actually hear Jesse Lee Soffer’s voice…

Did Jay Halstead return to Chicago PD?

Unfortunately, the cameo was more implied than it was literal. Upton talks with Halstead onscreen, but the other part of the conversation is muffled so that you can’t actually hear what Halstead is saying. All we can do is piece together the conversation through Upton’s responses, which suggest that things aren’t going well.

“You need more time, I gave you that. I want you to have your space,” Upton says in a voicemail. “I want you to have whatever you need but I do wanna know when you’re coming back. If you’re coming back.”

It’s a tough episode for Upton, as she gets double-crossed and kidnapped by assailants, but the biggest punch to the gut is undoubtedly the lack of clarity on Halstead’s part. He doesn’t tell her when he plans on coming back to Chicago, and eventually, he stops picking up the phone.

The last straw seems to be when Upton escapes her captors, and realizes that Halstead doesn’t even know what happened because he hasn’t been returning her calls. She vents this to Voight (Jason Beghe), who tells her something she’s needed to hear for most of season 10:

"“You know it is OK to let go if you’re the only one fighting. Doesn’t mean you don’t love ’em, just means you love you, too.”"

It’s a heartbreaking close to the episode, but one that should come as no surprise to those who have been following the characters. It was only a matter of time before Upton would have to move on, and disappointing as it may be, it’s for the best.
