One Chicago puts a surplus on family. Whether it’s the reason to spring into action, or the healing factor that helps after a traumatic day on the job, the relationship between parents and children runs deep through Chicago Med, Chicago Fire, and Chicago PD.

Chicago Fire‘s Brett (Kara Killmer) is the latest character to make a connection with a child on the job, and there’s a good chance that she could file for adoption by the season 11 finale. With that in mind, we decided to revisit the One Chicago characters who have done just that: adopted children of their own.

How many kids does Cruz have on Chicago Fire?

Joe Cruz (Joe Minoso) has become quite the father. In the past year, he’s witnessed the birth of his son Otis and adopted a boy that he met during an emergency call. The boy in question, Javi (Carlos S. Sanchez) was an orphan from Honduras who didn’t speak any English, so Cruz and his wife took him in while adoption agencies were looking for a permanent home.

Eventually, the Cruz family came to realize that Javi belonged with them, and the midseason finale for season 11 made him an official member. It was a wonderfully unexpected turn of events for all the characters involved.

How many kids does Burgess have on Chicago PD?

Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) is perhaps the most notable example of a main character adopting a child while on the job. Burgess encountered Makayla Ward (Ramona Edith Williams) during a harrowing case in which Makayla’s biological mother was killed by her father and his girlfriend in an attempt Makayla.

Burgess made an instant connection with Makayla during this case, and she eventually chose to adopt the child in Chicago PD season 8 after learning that she was in governmental custody. The mother-daughter duo have endured their struggles over the years (Makayla was kidnapped as recently as season 9), but they continue to help each other improve and strive to be better.

How many kids does Casey have on Chicago Fire?

This one tends to get lost in the shuffle because Casey (Jesse Spencer) is no longer the father of the child he adopted. But adopt he did, opposite his spouse at the time, Gabby Dawson (Monica Raymond). The couple adopted a boy named Louie in Chicago Fire season 5, but they were forced to part ways with him when his father Andre Keyes took back custody.

It was a heartbreaking arc; one that exacerbated the Casey and Dawson relationship and added to its ultimate end. Casey is currently the guardian of two boys in Oregon, so it seems as though he’s been given another chance to flex his paternal instinct.
