Chicago Fire update: Severide is not where he said he was
Chicago Fire gave fans an unexpected update on Severide (Taylor Kinney) in its latest episode. We were already made aware of the fact that the character would not be returning for the season 11 finale, so it was a pleasant surprise to be given any information on him at all.
Unfortunately, the information that we learned was bittersweet. Sweet in the sense that it implied he was doing well in his training program, but bitter in terms of what it suggested about his line of communication with his wife, Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo).
Is Severide coming back to Chicago Fire?
In “Change of Plans”, it was revealed that Severide was no longer part of the arson investigation training program in Alabama. Apparently, his superiors were so pleased with his progress and his general skill set that they transferred him elsewhere to help out with an ATF investigation.
This was all relayed through Cruz (Joe Minoso), who has always been a close friend and confidante of Severide’s, and who revealed this information as a means of bragging about and celebrating his friend. The problem is, Kidd was not aware of any of this…
As far as Kidd knew, Severide was going through the motions in the training program in Alabama, and the fact that he underwent this gigantic promotion without telling her hit her like a brick wall at the end of the episode. Understandably so. What does it mean when Severide doesn’t want to share this positive news with his own wife?

The revelation mirrors a similar dynamic on Chicago PD. Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) left the show and Chicago to fight drug cartels in Central America, yet when his wife Hailey Upton (Tracy Spiridakos) inquired about how long he’d be there, his superior revealed that he put in for an extension.
The Chicago PD marriage is on the rocks, so much so that Upton took off her wedding ring, so we don’t like what this information suggests about the Stellaride dynamic. Hopefully Severide has a good excuse for not mentioning it…
