Chicago Med hinted at a major development in its latest episode. Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) revealed that he still talks to Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) on a regular basis. This is a pretty unexpected thing to drop casually, since the character hasn’t been seen since the premiere of season 7.

Halstead and Manning had a strong connection during their shared time on the show, and the latter has struggled to move on from Manning since she was forced to leave the Gaffney Medical Center. The fact that they are still in touch has us wondering whether fans will get to see Manning return for the season 8 finale…

Is Torrey DeVitto coming back to Chicago Med?

Halstead’s love life has been a constant source of drama on Med, and season 8 has given him no shortage of options. Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram), a woman he used to date, has been brought back and elevated to main cast status, and yet, Asher has gotten closer to Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber).

Grace Song (TV Carpio) is a recent Med addition who has had some flirty banter with Halstead on the job, but the episode “Might Feel Like It’s Time for a Change” put an end to this when Halstead told Song that he doesn’t think pursuing a romance with her would be a good idea.

This pattern of not connecting with women he clearly has romantic chemistry with was a bit confusing, until Halstead dropped the news that he still talks to Manning. Furthermore, an early scene in the episode shows Halstead smiling at a drawing of him from Manning’s son, Owen!

It’s clear that Halstead and Manning are close as ever. The sudden flood of details about their connection feels purposeful, especially given that it happened in the penultimate episode of season 8. There’s a good chance that Manning could make a cameo in the finale, whether it be over the phone or in person.

We also have to consider that the Med writers may be looking for a way to write Halstead off the show, and getting him back together with Manning, who lives in Seattle, might be the way to go. We hope he sticks around, but the seeds of change are definitely being planted.
