Is Will Halstead leaving Chicago Med in season 9?
Dr. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has been, in many ways, the protagonist of Chicago Med. He’s been part of the show from the pilot, and his familial ties to the other shows in the franchise (his brother, Jay Halstead, recently left Chicago PD) makes him an indelible connecting point.
The more time passes, however, the more Halstead seems to unsure of his future. He’s reached a bit of a dead end in his personal life, as evidenced by his hands-off approach to relationships in the workplace following the exit of Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto).
A recent revelation by Halstead, however, had some wondering if he might consider leaving Gaffney and the season 8 finale gave us that answer.
Is Nick Gehlfuss leaving Chicago Med?
It seems Nick Gehlfuss has officially departed the Chicago Med cast after eight seasons of playing Dr. Will Halstead.
In the episode “Might Feel Like It’s Time for a Change,” Halstead informs Dr. Grace Song (TV Carpio) that he doesn’t think it’s a good idea to pursue workplace romance with her, and then we learn that not only has been in touch with Manning, he’s been in touch with her son Owen as well!
This seemingly came out nowhere, as there’s been little mention of Manning since she left the show during the season 7 premiere. Halstead took a little bit to get over the exit, but now we know that he never really had to get over it because they have remained in each other’s lives.
Manning lives in her native Seattle, and given the strife that Gaffney Medical Center has gone through in season 8– most notably, being turned into a for-profit hospital– it’s no surprise that staff members are looking at the door.

It seems this was more than a throwaway line as Will ended up handing in his resignation in the season finale after sabotaging OR 2.0 in order to shut it down after learning a glitch in its system resulted in the death of his patient.
After leaving Med with a passionate speech and a wave of emotional goodbyes to his colleagues, we see Will emerge from the Seattle airport in the closing moments of the episode. It’s here that he’s greeted by Natalie and her son, who welcome him with open arms in a move that gives the pair a happy ending but at the expense of the show losing another actor.
