Jay Halstead (Jesse Lee Soffer) was a standup guy for the duration of his time on Chicago PD. He was always mindful of what other people, and one could argue that his empathetic tendencies were what often got him in trouble.

Unfortunately, this mindfulness seems to have gone out the window now that he’s fighting drug cartels in Central America. The character has all but shunned his wife, Upton (Tracy Spiridakos), and fans are understandably frustrated by this heel turn.

We decided to ask the AI tool ChatGPT if Halstead has jumped the shark and officially become a bad husband, and the tool didn’t hold back…

Is Halstead leaving Upton on Chicago PD?

When asking ChatGPT to use the voice of a Chicago PD fan, here’s what it said:

"As a Chicago PD fan, I have to say that Jay Halstead’s behavior in this situation is definitely indicative of him being a bad husband. While it’s true that he had noble intentions in wanting to fight drug cartels and renew his sense of right and wrong, he completely disregarded the importance of communication and transparency within his marriage.Halstead made a major life decision without consulting or fully discussing it with his wife, Hailey Upton. Marriage is built on trust, mutual understanding, and shared decision-making, and he failed to uphold those principles. By not informing Hailey about his extension request and subsequently ignoring her phone calls, he displayed a lack of consideration and respect for their relationship.Hailey’s decision to take off her wedding ring signifies her hurt and frustration with Jay’s actions. It’s understandable that she would feel neglected and left in the dark. A healthy marriage requires open communication, support, and being there for one another, especially during difficult times."

Ouch. The thing that makes the answer such a bitter pill to swallow is that ChatGPT is spot on when it comes to Halstead’s complete disregard for Upton’s feelings, especially when it came time for him to extend his time in Central America. The fact that he didn’t clue her in at all on his plans, and went back on the promise he made her, says a lot about how estranged they are at this point in time.

While it’s hard to find a silver lining in the current Halstead and Upton dynamic, the fact that the latter is finally starting to accept the fact that her marriage is over with suggests a painful but very necessary growth. The more time she spends waiting around for Halstead the more difficult it will be when she has to move on.

It’s not the outcome any of us anticipated for this couple, but it does, in a way, reflect the way things can go sideways in real life. A shame.
