2023 has been an interesting year for fans of FOX’s hit drama 911.

In its sixth season, 911 remained FOX’s most-watched and highest-rated scripted series which made fans believe a renewal for the show would be an easy decision for the network. Instead, FOX decided not to renew the show for a seventh season.

While the show was canceled at FOX, it immediately found a new home on ABC with the Alphabet network picking the show up for a seventh season on the same day FOX passed on the show. The odd turn of events was due to financial purposes as 911 hails from 20th Television, meaning FOX has to pay a licensing fee to Disney to air the show. With production costs rising on the series, FOX decided not to continue with the show but Disney wasn’t about to let the hit series go and quickly saved it via ABC, which is also owned by Disney.

The good news is that 911 season 7 will be coming to ABC after FOX canceled the show, but the wait for season 7 will be a long one as the show won’t return in 2023.

911 season 7 release updates

When ABC opted to renew 911 for season 7, many were curious to know when the show might be slotted into the network’s busy schedule and this is a mystery that will continue into the fall. While some networks are being optimistic and have scheduled a fall lineup that includes the usual scripted comedies and dramas, ABC is going with a strike-proof schedule that does not include any scripted shows — 911 included.

As a result of this decision, 911 season 7 will not be coming to ABC in 2023 meaning fans will have to wait until 2024 for the next season of the series to arrive.

Due to the ongoing Writers Guild of America Strike, there is a strong possibility that production on the fall dramas and comedies will be delayed which will result in a delayed return for shows that would normally begin their new seasons in September.

Rather than taking a chance of having to come up with a contingency plan by scheduling scripted programs for the fall, ABC is going to lean into reality shows for its fall slate with the plan being to bring its returning scripted programs back at midseason.

This means the soonest we could see 911 season 7 premiere on ABC would be January 2024. However, that will all depend on how long the WGA strike lasts.
