It’s all been building up to this. Chicago Fire is airing its season 11 finale this week, and chief among the storylines that will play out in the episode is return of Matt Casey (Jesse Spencer). He left the show halfway through season 10, but he’s remained a peripheral presence through small cameos and the occasional reference.

It was confirmed several weeks ago that Casey would be returning for the finale, but now that NBC has released official promo photos, we now have an idea of what the character looks like and where he’ll be.

Is Jesse Spencer returning to Chicago Fire?

The photos show Casey returning to Firehouse 51, and wearing a Bureau of Fire jacket, denoting his new position in Portland, Oregon. His hair is a bit longer than it was when he left Chicago, but he appears to be in good spirits.

While interactions between Casey and his ex, Brett (Kara Killmer), don’t appear in the promo photos, NBC did give us a glimpse as to what their reunion will look like in the finale teaser. The teaser was aired right after last week’s episode, and was built primarily around scenes between the two of them.

The kicker is that Casey comes back to the doorway where he and Brett shared their first kiss. He mentions as much, before the teaser cuts to footage of the kiss from seasons prior. The two then share an emotionally charged moment in silence.

We’re excited to see what this moment leads to, and whether Casey and Brett decide to give their romance another try. If they do, they will have to make the decision to attempt long-distance or have one of them (presumably Brett) move so that they can live together. Either way, it’ll be a big decision for the two of them. It’ll definitely help take the sting away from the fact that Severide (Taylor Kinney) is still missing.
