Chicago Med promises ‘someone will go’ in season 8 finale
It’s getting serious on Chicago Med. Well, more serious. After a season 8 that saw several doctors leave Gaffney Medical Center, and a changing of ownership that saw Gaffney become a for-profit organization, the show is now promising that “someone will go” in the finale.
There are several different ways to interpret this phrase. One of the characters could die in a shocking fashion, or one of them could simply decide to leave Gaffney and move somewhere else for work. The thing that makes it confusing and also exciting, is that both options have been hinted at.
Who dies in the Chicago Med season 8 finale?
On the health side, there’s Dr. Archer (Steven Weber). Archer is in need of a kidney transplant, and his health has gotten increasingly worse over the season. If that wasn’t enough to make him a prime candidate, the promo for the finale shows him getting woozy in the operating room.
The other surgeons in the room try to stabilize him, but he stumbles and falls over. This scene is shown right after the announcement that “someone will go”, so there’s obviously the implication that Archer is at the top of the list.
The thing is, we doubt Chicago Med would spoil things with such obvious foreshadowing. We all know that Archer has been struggling, but given that the character has just been promoted to the main cast, and his dynamic with Dr. Asher (Jessy Schram) has made for one of the most popular subplots of the season, we doubt he will be axed.

While little has been mentioned, we do have a lingering suspicion that Dr. Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) could be the one who goes. Not in a mortal sense, but in terms of leaving Gaffney behind. He had some interesting revelations about his ongoing relationship with Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto) and this naturally had us reconsider who he is going to end up with.
We could see a world in which the character moves to Seattle to start a new life with Natalie and her son. We don’t necessarily want that, at least right away, but Med does seem to be hinting at this with Halstead’s characterization.
