From the moment Jesse Spencer returned as Matt Casey earlier this season on Chicago Fire, fans have been eager to know what the future might hold for his character. More specifically, would the guest stop lead to a more permanent return?

At first, it seemed like Spencer’s return would be a one-and-done thing. However, it was soon revealed that Casey would be making yet another trip to the Windy City in the season 11 finale which left many wondering how his latest return might factor into the bigger picture.

In the finale promo, it was made clear that Casey’s latest return was connected to the Homeland Security task force he joined and recruited Kidd for. While this was indeed the case, his latest return has left fans more eager than ever to know whether Casey is about to finally return to Chicago Fire for good!

Is Casey coming back to Chicago Fire for good?

In the season 11 finale of Chicago Fire, Casey returned to help bring down the domestic terrorists the Homeland Security task force had been tracking. Between working the case, Casey joined his 51 family in showing support for Brett by meeting with Amber in hopes of helping to answer any questions she might have about Brett and to sing Brett’s praises.

After 51’s surprise meeting with Amber, she agrees to reclaim custody of her baby so that Brett can adopt the little girl and cut through the red tape which would have prevented it from happening otherwise.

As the episode comes to a close, Casey drops in on Brett which is when he gets down on one knee to give her an engagement ring he bought a year and a half ago in asking her to marry him. While we don’t get to see Brett’s answer, the moment seemed to hint that Casey and Brett aren’t as over as we thought they were… and left us all to wonder whether the storyline was designed to help bring Casey back into the fold on a more regular basis. So is Casey coming back?

At this time, NBC has not announced whether Jesse Spencer will be returning as a series regular in season 12; however, he did tell Deadline earlier this year that he would be more than open to returning to the show in a larger capacity.

"“The potential to come back would be awesome. I’m always open to that but you know, the ball isn’t really in my court. I always told [series co-creator] Derek Haas that if there were episodes that he thought would be appropriate for me to come back, then I’m totally open to that because I want to see the old gang and I love working there. But in terms of me coming back full-time or something, I have no idea.”"

We can’t see the writers pulling a fast one on the fans again by having Casey propose only to break him and Brett up again. What remains to be seen is whether the storyline might have been designed to bring Casey back into the fold or as part of an exit storyline for Brett.
