We thought it might happen, but we were still surprised when it did. Will Halstead (Nick Gehlfuss) has left Chicago Med. The character decided to leave Gaffney Medical Center and start a new life with Dr. Natalie Manning (Torrey DeVitto).

It’s about as nice an ending as the character could have gotten, and it was nice to see him ride off into the sunset after seasons of romantic and professional turmoil. It’ll be tough adjusting to the show without Halstead, but his leaving doesn’t mean he’s gone for good…

Why did Halstead leave Chicago Med?

Nick Gehlfuss discussed his decision to leave during a recent interview with Variety. The actor cited a realization that he had taken the character of Halstead as far as he felt it could go, and didn’t want to run the risk of making things stale.

“I am attracted to the profession for the variety in it, and eight years is a long time,” Gehlfuss added. “It’s two college degrees! I’m joking now that I basically have a doctorate in television.”

The decision to leave was a tough one for the actor, as he’s gotten close to the cast and crew over this lengthy time span. He even admitted to feeling overwhelmed when he was shooting his final scenes. The silver lining to all this, is that both Gehlfuss and Chicago Med have not closed the door on Halstead for good.

When asked whether he’d consider coming back for an occasional cameo, Gehlfuss was all for it. He even revealed that the idea of bringing the character back once in a while was something he discussed with the show’s writers.

“We were all in agreement on that, thankfully, as I talked with Dick [Wolf] and the writers,” the actor confirmed. “Whenever it makes sense again for important moments, I’d love to don the white lab coat once again.”

Knowing that we haven’t seen the last of Halstead is definitely reassuring. Hopefully we get to see him sooner rather than later!
