Grey’s Anatomy suddenly said goodbye to Alex Karev at the start of 2020. What happened, and why did Justin Chambers choose to leave the show?

After saving Meredith’s career, Alex Karev suddenly took off from Seattle. Even his wife, Jo, had no idea where he was really going. It was during this time that we learned Justin Chambers was coming out of the series.

He wouldn’t even be in Alex’s final episode. Instead, it was all done via letters and a voiceover, as we found out where Alex and been and how he would leave the hospital. After getting letters from doctors and patients Meredith had known, Alex had gotten back in touch with his ex-wife Izzy. He found out she had two children from the embryos he and Izzy had frozen when Izzy was suffering from cancer.

Alex decided that he couldn’t go back to Seattle. So, he sent Jo his shares to the hospital and divorce papers to sign. He sent letters to Meredith and Bailey too so that he could explain his decisions. This was not something that made fans happy. In fact, there was a lot of hate and accusations that this was all out of character for the man Alex Karev had become over the years.

Why Justin Chambers left Grey’s Anatomy

This wasn’t some sort of creative decision to write Alex out. Instead, Justin Chambers wanted to leave the show, and this was the way the series decided to go. Other characters had been suddenly killed off, but Alex was given some sort of happy ending.

Why did Chambers want to leave? According to an interview with Deadline, he shared that he had wanted to do something different for some time while on the series. This was his chance to leave.

What has he done since? Very little. He was in four episodes of The Offer, and that’s been it since leaving the medical drama. He did also say that he wanted to change career, so that could explain this.
