The 9-1-1 franchise has been on shaky ground lately. Despite being one of Fox’s highest-rated programs, the original 9-1-1 show was cancelled by the network due to rising costs. It was only because ABC picked up the show that it will be coming back in the fall. Did the same cancellation fate await 9-1-1: Lone Star?

Thankfully, the answer is no. 9-1-1: Lone Star has been renewed for an additional season by Fox. The first responder drama is expected to return in the fall with a full season and all of its main cast members in tow.

When does 9-1-1: Lone Star come back?

Part of the reason Lone Star was renewed over its parent show is because 9-1-1 has been on the network for a longer time, and is therefore more expensive. 9-1-1: Lone Star is still relatively new in comparison to the rest of the shows in the procedural and first responder genre, and its budgets reflect it. Generally speaking, the longer a show is on the air, the more costly it becomes.

Fox Entertainment President Michael Thorn told Deadline that he is thrilled to have 9-1-1: Lone Star back, despite the complications that led the network to can 9-1-1.

“Right now we’re really focused on our own schedule and how we look forward with our own series,” he explained. “We’re really proud of the 9-1-1 franchise and excited to announce another season of Lone Star. It’s really a standout series… and rest assured, we’re going to relaunch that show. It’s an important show to our audience, and we’re very excited to have it back.”

Thorn is right to be thrilled, given the consistently high ratings that Lone Star has managed to pull in. The show drew an average of 3.605 viewers per episode in 2023, according to TV Series Finale, which helped it become the third-highest scripted show on the network behind The Simpsons and the original 9-1-1.  Since the latter is on ABC now, Lone Star has become even more crucial to the network’s appeal. We can’t wait to see what season 5 has in store.
