Mouch (Christian Stolte) is in bad shape on Chicago Fire. The character was shot and rushed to the hospital in the season 11 finale. Things seemed reasonably stable at first, but the last we saw of the character, he was bleeding out and flatlining…

This raises some huge questions, namely: is Mouch going to die? The character is one of the elder statesman of the 51 with Herrmann (David Eigenberg), but it’s been a long time since his life has been in danger. It feels like it could possibly be the end of the road for him and actor Christian Stolte.

Is Christian Stolte leaving Chicago Fire 12?

There’s a precedent for this sort of storytelling on Chicago Fire. The show has a habit of killing off well-liked characters in season premieres, whether it be Leslie Shay (Lauren German) or Otis (Yuri Sardarov). Mouch slots in neatly with these characters, which is all the more reason to worry.

Then there’s Christian Stolte’s Instagram message. Shortly before the finale aired, he posted an oddly reflective thanks to fans. “No spoilers, I just want to say it’s been an extraordinary 11 years, and I am so very grateful for the experience,” he wrote. “Truck on, Chi-Hards.”

This had fans understandably concerned, especially after the episode aired and Mouch’s fate was thrown into question. To make matters worse, based on the season premiere deaths of the people we previously mentioned, there will be no mention or announcement about Mouch’s death until it (hypothetically) occurs.

Whether or not Mouch leaves is arguably the biggest mystery heading into next season, and that includes whether or not Brett (Kara Killmer) said yes to the proposal from Casey (Jesse Spencer). It would be dishonest to make a confident prediction, but we will go as far as to say that even if the character does die, he will be seen onscreen.

Christian Stolte will not be someone who gets the axe offscreen, given how important he’s been to fans over the last decade. Still, we hope he sticks around for seasons to come.
